Windsor Ultimate featured in the Windsor Star

Well its great, the city is finally taking notice of a little known sport (in Southern Ontario at least) called Ultimate, today we had a great little article in the Windsor Star, so hopefully we will have a great turnout tonight (weather permitting) at Realtor Park.

FRISBEE EDUCATION

Anyone interested in learning more about Ultimate Frisbee is invited to a beginners clinic tonight at Realtor Park.

Weather permitting, members of Windsor’s four-year old co-ed league will introduce the sport to anyone 18 years and over (or 16 and 17 with parent’s consent) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Windsor’s league plays on Wednesday evenings at Lake-shore Woods off Banwell Road on lined fields that are 120 yards long and 40 yards wide.

There are six teams with seven on the field at a time.

The goal is to work the frisbee up the field and over the opponent’s goal line but contact is not permitted and players police themselves for infractions.

Sportsmanship and team spirit are held in high regard and the standings even reflect superior spirit as well as wins and losses.

Windsor natives Paul and L.B. Medved helped start the league after returning to Windsor in 1998 from Vancouver where they learned to play.

“To start a sport that no one has ever heard of is tough,” Paul Medved said. “But we were the only city of our size in Canada to not have Ultimate Frisbee.”

Ottawa has 5,000 players and the sport has even reached into some Canadian high schools.

“That’s our goal to get it into the high school curriculum,” Medved said.

To that end, Windsor players have done introductory sessions in various schools in Windsor and Essex county.
