June 26th, 2011

Where were you last Monday…and the Monday before that? We missed you at Pick Up. We had two great turn outs, but we could always use more. Pick up is a great time to practice your throwing, catching and running. Let’s see you Monday night, and remember to bring a WHITE shirt and a DARK shirt. If any veterans plan to attend, please bring a set of cones.

Strategy – Ultimate Handbook play-by-play guide

As mentioned in the clinic and via newsletter, we will be focusing on two key strategic plays this year (as well as vertical stack). To better understand the dynamics and logistics behind it, I wanted to show people a great Ultimate Frisbee resource — the Ultimate Handbook

Use the links below to get a sense for how zone or horizontal stacking is done:

How to run a Zone defense:
http://www.ultimatehandbook.com/blog/strategy/zone-defence/

How to use a horizontal stack to your advantage during play (note the 3 handlers!):

Feel free to go even further and get more of this strategy into your game, your legs will thank you (less running and better scoring opportunities).

2nd Clinic May 26th @ Realtor Park

May 22nd, 2010

Our 2nd Clinic will be this week Wednesday at Realtor Park (same place as last week).  For those that did not come out, it is highly recommended you come out to get an idea of how to play the game.  We will be focusing on strategic play, how to use ZONE coverage, utilizing a CUP defense, also a horizontal stack formation.

IF we have rain (and the city closes the field) we will make our way to the Average Joe’s park (as it is not a city park).

For more details on strategy in Ultimate Frisbee, please check out the Ultimate Handbook, for interactive flash play-by-plays to get a good idea of what to do.

paul_standingI know all of you are looking at your calendars and waiting in anticipation for the official beginning of our season. And as you know we are starting off with two adult training clinics on May 6th and 13th.

These clinics are here to teach valuable skills and to brush up on the old stuff you went over last season (for those veterans), as well as to learn something new.  This is a must for everyone new or old, get valuable info at these clinics by attending and training with the rest of the league. We promise it will be fun!

If you haven’t already registered and want to attend please register first, so we get an idea of attendance levels.

Things to bring:

  1. League Fee ($50)
  2. Water / Snack
  3. Two shirts (dark or white)
  4. Cleats (help with traction)
  5. Friends!

Hope to see all of you on the field for 6PM both nights!

Disc throwing techniques

April 12th, 2009

Found this interesting info on Wikipedia, so providing a link for all Windsor Ultimate players, go over some of these and enjoy!

Flying discs (including Frisbees) can be thrown in many ways. All involve spinning the disc to give it gyroscopic stability, and accelerating its mass to a certain velocity. Without spin, a disc will wobble and fall; without velocity, the disc will not go anywhere. Using these two guidelines, any number of throws are possible. Most discs are designed to create lift when thrown with the flat side up.
